These highly rated restaurants in San Francisco are go-big-or-go-home type spots. In other words, most of these gastronomic sensations require a good chunk of cash (or a very flexible expense account). This is because there are more than a handful of Michelin stars and James Beard award winners in this bunch, and even a few that have been among the "World’s 50 Best Restaurants" list. If you’d rather not dole out the money for these spots (especially #1), we do have good news: Many of these restaurants have corresponding cookbooks, so you can try your own hand at their most popular recipes — good luck!
1. Saison
Saison may be a once-in-a-lifetime type splurge (the 22-course tasting menu is $398 per person). The three Michelin-starred SoMA spot is officially California’s most expensive restaurant (but, hey, tipping is not required!). And it’s been ranked #27 among the World’s 50 Best Restaurants in 2016.
The name is French (meaning "season"), so expect plenty of flavor. But the food is more New American: fresh, innovative, and adventurous with spectacular presentation.
2. Boulevard
This long-revered fine-dining establishment puts a delicate, French-inspired spin on contemporary California cuisine. And the views of the Bay Bridge are pretty spectacular as well.
Specialties include the lamb t-Bone, angus filet, and quail with foie stuffing.
3. Liholiho Yacht Club
Described as serving "heritage driven food with California ingredients," this Lower Nob Hill spot is one of the newer ones on this list, and also one of the most inventive. Fresh seafood is a specialty, and much of it has a refreshing Hawaiian touch.
The intricately flavored dishes may even get you craving beef tongue (with kimchi), clams, squid, caviar, or maybe even king salmon with tail included.
4. Nopa
Elegant but without the stuffy vibe, Nopa in the neighborhood Nopa has been a favorite spot for those seeking simple, organic, rustic California comfort food.
The brunch is an absolute must. I mean, how can you deny this?!
5. State Bird Provisions
You'll need to reserve a table well in advance at this hot Fillmore, James Beard-winning spot to get a taste of their "adventurous, inventive, delicious, thoughtful contemporary American" cuisine.
Sure, the plates are small and served on roving carts, but it's all incredibly rich and the best way to try a wide range of flavors.
6. SPQR

Expect rich and creamy cheeses, fresh pastas, seasonal delicacies, and an extensive wine menu.
7. Slanted Door
This acclaimed restaurant started in the Mission District in 1995. It quickly won over fans and critics and moved into the prestigious gastronomic center of the Ferry Building.
While the gorgeous restaurant overlooks the Bay, but you'll most likely have your eyes fixated on the raw oysters and the carefully crafted modern Vietnamese dishes. Tip: Can't get a reservation? Get a taste of their goods at Out the Door.
8. Al’s Place
This cozy, casual, Mission District spot won itself a Michelin star in 2016 and recognition from Bon Appetit as the best new restaurant in the country in 2015. And good news: This one won’t totally break the bank.
The eclectic menu focuses on seasonal vegetables and seafood — meat is just a side dish, folks. Some of the more unique items: the brine pickled french fries, green pea curry, and the fluffy foie gras terrine.
9. Zuni Cafe
This classic Hayes Valley spot has been around since 1979 (when it began as a Mexican joint). It’s since become a trendsetter in bistro-style comfort food, using seasonal, organic ingredients inspired by regional French and Italian cuisine.
People have traveled across the world just to order their famous whole roast chicken for two with bread salad. Do know that you’ll have to wait up to 75 minutes for it to cook up in the brick oven!
10. Coi
Another one of "The World’s Best Restaurants" (voted on the list in 2014), this North Beach favorite has the sleek yet warm elegance of a luxury spa, and serves New American specialties centered on fresh seafood.
Every dish is intricately put together, as pleasing on the eye as it is on the tongue.
