Embark on a heart-stopping adventure along the Klamath River when you go on a guided tour in a real redwood dugout canoe. This spring, Northern California's Yurok Tribe will start hosting guided canoe tours and it's an experience you won't be able to pass up.
Owned and operated by the Yurok Tribe, Yurok Redwood Canoe Tours is a real "Only in Northern California" experience. Offered exclusively in Yurok Country, these tours look like a great way to explore California's famous redwood country while learning a thing or two about Yurok culture.
The Yurok Tribe is the largest tribe in the state of California. Located in the northwestern corner of the state, Yurok Country is absolutely beautiful. Visitors travel from all over the world to see the groves of old-growth redwoods and the mighty Klamath River.
Rest assured, this is unlike any other nature tour you've experienced before. Each canoe tour is hosted by a Yurok guide who will tell you about the history of the redwood canoe, what the redwoods mean to the Yurok people, and the history of the tribe as stewards of this breathtaking region.
The redwood canoes themselves are one of the most fascinating parts of the tour. Used by the tribe for thousands of years as transportation between villages, these canoes were used for everything including hunting, fishing, gathering, and ceremonies. Considered an essential part of the Yurok culture, the canoes were used on both rivers and the ocean.
The tours will start at the Yurok Visitor Center where you will learn about the canoes along with boating safety and protocol. You'll then travel to the launch site before embarking on a two-hour tour along the beautiful Klamath River. Participants can even try their hand at controlling the canoe, if they so wish.
Everybody is welcome to partake in a redwood canoe tour and learn about the Yurok people and their values. These canoes and the river represents thousands of years of Yurok history, and this tour is an excellent way to experience that history firsthand. Tours will start Spring 2020, so visit the Visit Yurok Country Facebook page to receive updates on this unique experience.
