If you've done a lot of exploring around Nevada County then you've likely come across the famous Independence Trail near Nevada City. The trail is one of the most popular in the area for its outstanding bridge views and ADA-accessility. However, few people realize there is an offshoot of the trail that leads you to the most gorgeous natural pools. Whether you're looking for a place to take a cool dip or simply a spot to relax away from the crowds, this short and sweet hike will lead you to the perfect place.
The Independence Trail always promises a unique adventure. It's approximately five miles in it's entirety, but there's an awesome little side trail you can take that will lead you somewhere truly amazing.
To reach it, you'll depart from the western side of the Independence trail and traverse it for approximately half of a mile before coming across a short spur trail that leads you to Jones Bar. The spur trail is just another half-mile long but it's quite steep so be careful.
Approximately a mile after departing from the West Independence Trail, you'll arrive at the oasis known as Jones Bar. This area is made up three separate natural pools and they are absolutely stunning.
A secluded experience along the Yuba River can be hard to find, but Jones Bar offers just that. The rustic setting is absolutely beautiful. The pools are perfectly suited for swimming or simply laying out and gazing at with a good book in hand.
The tranquil solitude is one thing, but the pool themselves are simply breathtaking. They boast the most lovely blue-green color, and they are so clear that you can see down straight to the bottom.
If you'd like to avoid the steep hike, you can actually drive to Jones Bar instead. However, a vehicle with four-wheel drive is highly recommended. To get there, take Newtown Road off Bitney Springs and turn onto Jones Bar, following the dirt road downhill until you reach the area.
