Rivers, creeks, tributaries, waterfalls and lakes are all a lot closer than you think. Northern California has her fair share of river beauties that weave through her hills and valleys.

The Eel River runs for 196 miles, emptying in the Pacific Ocean. The water runoff in January and February is 100 times more than the summer months. Spanish explorers sailed this river in search of a passageway; instead they discovered "natives who were uncivilized." Salmon canneries were in great number along the Eel River in the late 1800s. A petroglyph was discovered in 1930, placing prehistoric inhabitants here over 2500 years ago.
There's lots I could say about the Russian River, but lets just start with this: A white sturgeon was caught that was 8 feet long in 1988! Seriously. They make em' big here.
This beauty is the main tributary of the Sacramento River. Its history is rich with gold-seekers and the first settlers to hunt for treasure made their way here in 1852. The upper Feather River was home to the Maidu Indians.
Gold found here in the 1800s was believed to be from volcanic activity in the Klamath mountains thousands of years ago. This waterway is known for its salmon, steelhead, and rainbow trout.
At 165 miles long. Trinity River is the longest tributary of the Klamath river. Once known (in 1828) as "Indian Scalp River." That's pretty unsettling, if you ask me. Sad fact: Jerry Garcia's Father drowned here.
This gem is king of our rivers in Northern California. Beginning in the Klamath mountain, it runs 445 miles before its finish line at the San Francisco Bay and Delta. Since its creation it has been the home of hundreds of ancient American Indian tribes. The history here is probably more than we'll ever know. Pretty incredible if you ask me.
The Tuolomne River begins at 8,000 feet above sea level. Over one million visitors head to this waterway each year to enjoy its pristine beauty. Many folks love to white water raft its 15 mile run. Wear a life vest, people!
Before 1912 when the Goodwill dam was built, this was the hot spot for over 30,000 salmon to spawn annually. Once the dam was up, the numbers fell to 3,000 annually. This is the most dammed river with over 30 dams peppered throughout. Plenty people have gone on lots of political tirades for this very reason. Regardless, it's still a draw for folks to kayak and enjoy.

Generally, leaves start to change in the eastern part of SoCal as early as mid-September and peak around mid-October, with the season lasting well into November as you go farther west. Here are a few unexpectedly beautiful, and somewhat lesser-known, places to do a little leaf-peeping.

Need To Know: A Big Pines Parking Pass is required. Passes are $10/per day at Jackson Lake and can be purchased on-site.
Whether you choose to drive, hike, or bike to Jackson Lake, you’ll find a lesser-known fall wonderland and a gorgeous spot to enjoy a seasonal picnic. The landscape surrounding the small lake puts on a simply beautiful display this time of year and it is less than two hours from Los Angeles. There are also great camping spots near the lake so you can revel in the fall beauty a little longer.
Wow Factor: A crystal clear lake and a scenic road reminiscent of Vermont
Need To Know: There is no fee to visit the lake. Mid to late-October usually has the most vibrant foliage.

Nestled in the San Bernardino Mountains, Green Valley Lake is a secluded hidden gem. At a higher elevation and far less crowded than neighboring Lake Arrowhead or Big Bear Lake (also stunning in the fall!), this picturesque spot is enchanting surrounded by bright shades of yellow, gold, and red. The tiny town offers lots of activities to truly enjoy the area’s natural beauty including hiking, biking, and horseback riding, as well as picnic tables and a playground for the kids. You can follow a 5-mile loop around the lake’s shoreline and even bring your fur-baby along for the adventure. The scenic Green Valley Lake Road has even been compared to Vermont in the fall!

Need To Know: The Sespe River Trail is 30 miles out and back, and it is considered a challenging hike.
This may not be the most accessible fall foliage spot, but it is one of the coolest for those in the know (and who are up for the challenge). In an otherwise arid canyon in the Sespe Wilderness is a wild creek and natural hot springs. Along the water is a riparian outcropping of beautiful sycamore and cottonwood trees that turn bright yellow and gold toward the very end of the fall season. It is truly a unique sight to see.

Peltzer Pumpkin Farm is a family-owned and operated farm offering much more than great pumpkins. When you make a trip to Live Oak Canyon Pumpkin Patch, picking the perfect pumpkin from a massive selection is just the beginning. Visit on the weekend to join the fun at the Fall Harvest Festival which offers a host of activities including arts and crafts, festival games, Farmer Golf, and the famous pumpkin canon. While at the farm, stop by the Produce Market Stand for fresh produce, fall decor, and more, and grab a bite at The Tanaka Grill.

Lavender festivals are a beautiful summer tradition, but at the end of summer and well into the fall, this lavender farm hosts the enchanting Lavender Nights. The fragrant purple blooms are long gone but the fields and trees become a magical wonderland illuminated by nearly half a million twinkling lights. Stroll through the rows of lavender and the century-old olive grove. There are lawn games, gorgeous photo opportunities, lavender-infused beverages and sweets, and delicious organic dinner items at the food court and bar - plus a delightful marketplace to shop for unique goods. The atmosphere is complimented by live musical performances every night.
The annual JazzTrax Festival is a spectacular reason to escape to Catalina Island for a weekend. A total of 30 smooth jazz stars will grace the stage of the magnificent ballroom at the Avalon Casino over the course of two weekends in October - a tradition that has continued since 1987. Whichever weekend you attend, consider arriving in time for Thursday’s Unplugged Under the Stars at the Descanso Beach Club. This annual fall event is one every music lover should experience at least once.

Visiting one of our beautiful botanical gardens is an excellent way to soak in some vibrant fall color, and one of our absolute favorites is Descanso Gardens. Many of the trees change colors with the cooler weather - especially later in the season - and the gardens are populated with beautiful birds, butterflies, turtles, Mallard ducks, lizards, cottontail rabbits, and adorable mule deer. There are many seasonal flowers blooming in fall as well, adding to the color. Admission tickets are quite reasonable ($15 for adults at the time of writing) and Descanso Gardens offers Free Tuesday tickets for the third Tuesday of every month.
Wow Factor: Some of the state’s best fall foliage, and an easy trek!
Need To Know: There is paved parking at the trailhead. The preserve is over 900 acres and includes a botanical garden and Children's Discovery Center.
