Hiding out in the historic railroad town of Dunsmuir is a fantastic garden that's worth exploring. The Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens has completely transformed this otherwise common city park into a beautiful oasis of lush plant life.
The garden encompasses ten acres within Dunsmuir City Park that consists of hills, wooded areas, and meadows. Bordering the gorgeous Upper Sacramento River, there's natural beauty to be found everywhere you look.
Take advantage of the numerous walking trails that meander through the park to explore the garden's different sections. There are six separate areas within the park, including the Gazebo Garden, Fern Gardens, and the Hummingbird/Butterfly Gardens.
Keep an eye out for all of the different plants and see how many you can name. The garden's most well-known plant is the native white dogwood that is famous for its spectacular spring bloom. Shasta lilies and native azaleas also put on a colorful show.
Established by the Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens Committee in 1992, the garden was created during a time when the Dunsmuir community was in need of revitalization. Today, the garden acts as one of the town's top attractions and maintains its role as a place where the community can be in nature.
A playground and picnic sites can also be found within the gardens, so make a day of it and pack a picnic to enjoy in the shade. This is a beautiful place to visit no matter what time of year it is—not just spring and summer.
