Butano State Park is a lovely, lesser-known park near Pescadero that showcases a redwood-filled canyon and Little Butano Creek. Whether you're looking for an adventure or a short walk in the forest, this park does not fall short.
The park was created in 1957 to protect California's coast redwoods from logging. Today, it offers a quiet, beautiful landscape where you can enjoy an escape from civilization. Towering redwood trees, babbling creeks, lush foliage - it's like a scene out of a storybook.
Featuring 40 miles of hiking trails across 4,000 acres of canyons and uplands, there's all types of adventure waiting to be had at Butano State Park. While taking advantage of the park's hiking trails, you're sure to enjoy a sight of the forest wildlife, including woodpeckers, newts, banana slugs, and more.
Tucked amid the trees are 21 drive-in campsites, 18 walk-in campsites, and a backcountry trail camp with eight campsites. Drinking water is available in the main campground and day-use areas of the park.
If you only have an hour or two to explore, the park's Little Butano Creek Trail is a suitable adventure. It's just a 1.5-mile gentle hike through the heart of the park's redwood forest.
If you have a bit longer to explore the park's breathtaking scenery, the 5-mile Jackson Flats Loop is a great way to see both redwood forests and wetlands. You'll even be treated to sweeping ridgetop views!
