To reach the sandy shores, you'll need to go on a short hike from the Tennessee Valley Trailhead. To get to the beach and back is a total of 3.4 miles round-trip.
One of the most striking aspects of Tennessee Beach is its secluded atmosphere.
All you need to do is exit Highway 1 onto Tennessee Valley Road and drive west to the end. The beach may be secluded, but it's not difficult to find with the right directions.

And here's an interesting historical tidbit: If you happen to visit the beach during an extremely low tide, you might spot a rusting ship engine buried in the shifting sands.
This engine is a relic from the steamship SS Tennessee, which tragically ran aground in the cove back in 1853. Despite the unfortunate incident, all 550 passengers on board managed to reach the beach safely, and even more astonishingly, fourteen chests of gold were salvaged before the ship broke apart.
Dogs are not allowed on this beach, so leave your pup at home for this trip.
Finally, as you plan your trip, remember that the trailhead to Tennessee Beach is conveniently located just a 20-minute drive from downtown Mill Valley. So, why not make a day of it? Whether you choose to drive, hike, or bike to Jackson Lake, you’ll find a lesser-known fall wonderland and a gorgeous spot to enjoy a seasonal picnic. The landscape surrounding the small lake puts on a simply beautiful display this time of year and it is less than two hours from Los Angeles. There are also great camping spots near the lake so you can revel in the fall beauty a little longer.

Nestled in the San Bernardino Mountains, Green Valley Lake is a secluded hidden gem. At a higher elevation and far less crowded than neighboring Lake Arrowhead or Big Bear Lake (also stunning in the fall!), this picturesque spot is enchanting surrounded by bright shades of yellow, gold, and red. Need To Know: The Sespe River Trail is 30 miles out and back, and it is considered a challenging hike.

In an otherwise arid canyon in the Sespe Wilderness is a wild creek and natural hot springs. Along the water is a riparian outcropping of beautiful sycamore and cottonwood trees that turn bright yellow and gold toward the very end of the fall season. It is truly a unique sight to see.

Lavender festivals are a beautiful summer tradition, but at the end of summer and well into the fall, this lavender farm hosts the enchanting Lavender Nights. The fragrant purple blooms are long gone but the fields and trees become a magical wonderland illuminated by nearly half a million twinkling lights. Stroll through the rows of lavender and the century-old olive grove. There are lawn games, gorgeous photo opportunities, lavender-infused beverages and sweets, and delicious organic dinner items at the food court and bar - plus a delightful marketplace to shop for unique goods. The atmosphere is complimented by live musical performances every night.
The annual JazzTrax Festival is a spectacular reason to escape to Catalina Island for a weekend. A total of 30 smooth jazz stars will grace the stage of the magnificent ballroom at the Avalon Casino over the course of two weekends in October - a tradition that has continued since 1987. Whichever weekend you attend, consider arriving in time for Thursday’s Unplugged Under the Stars at the Descanso Beach Club. This annual fall event is one every music lover should experience at least once.

Visiting one of our beautiful botanical gardens is an excellent way to soak in some vibrant fall color, and one of our absolute favorites is Descanso Gardens. Many of the trees change colors with the cooler weather - especially later in the season - and the gardens are populated with beautiful birds, butterflies, turtles, Mallard ducks, lizards, cottontail rabbits, and adorable mule deer. There are many seasonal flowers blooming in fall as well, adding to the color. Admission tickets are quite reasonable ($15 for adults at the time of writing) and Descanso Gardens offers Free Tuesday tickets for the third Tuesday of every month.

Need To Know: There is paved parking at the trailhead. The preserve is over 900 acres and includes a botanical garden and Children's Discovery Center.
