The days of taking leisurely drives aren't over. A great way to both unwind and see some beautiful countryside is to take a drive, and North Dakota has plenty of perfect places to do so. If you'd really like to get away from it all then you'll definitely want to consider taking this particular route that feels like you're just taking a road to nowhere. Roll down the windows, set the cruise, and enjoy this scenic experience:
Take a stunning, relaxing drive through the gentle curves and over the rolling hills of the Turtle Mountains in North Dakota.
This drive is the Turtle Mountain Scenic Byway, which starts nowhere and ends nowhere. It goes along County Highway 43 near the Canadian border just north of towns like Rolla and Bottineau.
The route is about 45 minutes long of a drive but you'll likely want to stop off at a few places along the way to see just how gorgeous the natural scenery is here.
Take a detour partway through into the Lake Metigishoe State Park just off the highway.
In this park you'll be treated to the best lakeside trails and a peaceful, immersive patch of nature.
More stops along the way include places like the Mystic Horizons, North Dakota's more modern take on the world famous Stonehenge that not many people know about.
As you drive along you'll also see places like the Willow Lake National Wildlife Refuge. It really doesn't get much prettier than the landscapes in the Turtle Mountains and there is no better way to experience them than on the scenic byway.
