Luckily for us, part of North Dakota's history has been documented by photographs that give us a chance to take a glimpse into the past. We've spent some time searching for and compiling some of the oldest photos taken in the Peace Garden State. A handful of them came before it was even a state at all! These rare photos are mesmerizing to see, check them out:
1. A general store in Grand Forks, ND, taken in 1880.
2. The hunting party of Custer who can be seen standing in the center. Taken near Fort Abraham Lincoln in 1875.
3. Main Street in Linton, ND, taken sometime during the 1910s.
4. Carts gathering at a railway station next to the Red River. Taken in the 1860s, well before ND was a state.
5. A boat carrying freight across the Missouri River near Williston, ND. This was taken in 1912.
6. A family on the plains in western North Dakota while it was still part of the Dakota Territory in 1883.
7. An early log and sod house on the prairie, taken sometime prior to 1920.
8. Men pulling a road grader near a family farm in North Dakota, taken in 1918.
9. Fort Totten when it was still used as a military fort, taken in the mid 1800s.
10. A ranch just outside of Devils Lake, North Dakota. The photograph was taken in 1891, just two years after ND became a state.
What did you think of the photos? Did you recognize anything? It's crazy to think most of them came before North Dakota was even considered separate from our southern neighbors! You can explore more of the state's history through photographs we have collected. Why not check out these pics from the Peace Garden State in the 1940s?
