There are roadside attractions all over the place that are huge versions of regular things, but this one stands above the rest. And we don't mean that in just a literal tall way, but because there is so much more to it than just the statue itself. From the massive monument to the other fun parts of this attraction, it's entirely unique to North Dakota and the perfect afternoon trip destination.
Take a visit to one of North Dakota's essential roadside attractions, the National Buffalo Museum. The main part of this attraction is the "World's Largest Buffalo," a humongous statue that goes by the name Dakota Thunder.
The monument is truly massive and weighs many tons. It was completed in 1959 and has been standing tall over the city of Jamestown since then.
While Dakota Thunder is pretty cool, there is so much more to this classic Americana attraction than the statue. The National Buffalo Museum is great for kids and adults alike and is loaded with things to see.
Tons of artifacts from many years ago when the Native American tribes of North Dakota lived among and hunted bison are available to see on display. There is a lot of history to learn and all of it is fascinating.
The museum also has beautiful mounted bison and even a bear. One of the coolest parts of the museum that made it special over the rest was its rare white bison - and we're not talking about the mount shown below.
Along with a giant bison and bison relics, the National Buffalo Museum is also home to a live bison herd that resides in a field just below the statue. This herd was home to the only true albino bison ever known.
Now, that bison's descendants and other rare white bison still roam the pasture and you can see them for yourself.
Along with a view of the bison herd, you'll also be treated to a spectacular panoramic view of Jamestown. All in all this is a fantastic attraction for anyone to visit. There is a lot to it and it's what makes it unique.
The National Buffalo Museum is located at 500 17th St. SW, Jamestown, ND 58401. For more information about the museum, click here.
