If there's a unique dessert and comfort food that speaks to North Dakotans on a personal level, it's kuchen. This German treat has had recipes passed down through generations to many residents of the state who fondly remember their grandmothers baking it and still enjoy eating it today. With a variety of types and flavors, it's hard to say you don't like it at all when you're from the Peace Garden State! Luckily for us kuchen lovers, there is a plethora of restaurants, bakeries, and companies that are entirely dedicated to kuchen here. I think it's safe to say that we have some of the world's best!

If you didn't know, kuchen is a German cake-like dessert that has become a staple food in North Dakota. You can buy a full one fresh or grab a slice at a restaurant. Either way, they're delicious.
And it's important to note that they are not pronounced like "ku-chen," but actually ku-ken." You don't pronounce the "ch" like you would in "chocolate." The more you know!
Kuchen comes in many flavors and types, but usually consist of some kind of pastry, a fruit filling, and a custard top. Add on a side of ice cream or a swirl of whip cream on top and you've got yourself the perfect North Dakotan dessert!
Cherry, strawberry, rhubarb, blueberry, apricot, juneberry... the list goes on, and everyone has their favorite kind!
