There are places to catch a glimpse of the true beauty of North Dakota that will knock you off your feet. People think that this state does not have much to offer in terms of natural scenery, but they would easily be proven wrong by visiting these scenic overlooks. They offer a panoramic view of some of the most impressive natural wonders of the Peace Garden State, and it is recommended that you see them in person to fully appreciate them. In the meantime, take a look:
1. Painted Canyon Overlook
By far one of the most famous overlooks in North Dakota is this one. It is located in the Theodore Roosevelt National Park and will give you an out-of-this-world view of the colorful canyons in the park.
2. Sullys Hill
The Sullys Hill National Game Preserve has a fantastic overlook of Devil's Lake. This is especially beautiful when fall rolls around and makes the dense trees turn into an array of colors. It is also a good spot to catch the sunset over the lake.
3. River Bend Overlook
This famous overlook is not only a way to see one of the most breathtaking views in the state, but also has interesting history behind it. The building that has the overlook view in it was build decades ago and shares history of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park and the country. This overlook is a must-see for anyone wanting to explore North Dakota.
4. Butte Saint Paul Park
This grand view of North Dakota from Butte Saint Paul, near the town of Dunseith, is well worth the short trail up the hill. You can read about the history of this important spot on the historical marker at the top.
5. Little Missouri State Park Overlook
Wow! Now that's a view. The Little Missouri State Park offers great spots to witness the gorgeous sights of the area. There are a lot of trails on ridge lines to see them from horseback or while hiking, but they also have a specific overlook spot with a deck that extends over the edge of the rugged hill to provide an unmatched view.
6. Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park
There is spots in this state park that give you amazing views of the river and historic structures. Both the village and the fort itself are viewable from spots that can be reached on trails.
7. Oxbow Overlook
See the Little Missouri River wind its way through the jagged terrain of the badlands at this overlook in the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It's hard to find a view that surpasses it in sheer natural beauty, and it is on a whole other level when you see it in person. Talk about gorgeous!
8. Fort Ransom State Park
This majestic, almost dream like view can be seen on trails in Fort Ransom State Park, such as the Ridge Line Trail. They overlook breathtaking rolling hills, farms, and forests that are present in the Sheyenne River Valley. It doesn't get much more pretty than this!
