Nestled in central North Dakota is one of the largest reservoirs in the United States; it's called Lake Sakakawea - after the Lemhi Shoshone woman of the same name - and it's a stunningly beautiful escape that, depending on where you're located, may not even be terribly far from home. It's the largest lake entirely within North Dakota, and the second-largest in the United States (by area). It sits just 50 miles away from the town of Bismarck and is a site beloved for not just its beauty but its recreational value.

The area is popular - well, as popular as anywhere in quiet ol' North Dakota gets, anyway - among folks who enjoy activities like boating, swimming, and fishing.
The lake is also beloved among campers; it has 149 modern campsites (with water and power), 10 group campsites, and 42 primitive campsites available for use. There are also two camping cabins available at just $60 per night; reservations must be made well in advance, as the cabins are popular.
Sakakawea is breathtaking year-round; in the winter, parts of it freeze over and help create a surreal, magical vibe.
Sometimes, during times of the year when the water is warmer than the air around it, you'll be able to see steam rising from the surface of the lake - and sometimes, even better still, a calm fog rolls over the water and brings about an overall sense of peace. It's a wonderful spot to sit and stay awhile, even if you don't plan on camping or staying overnight.
As with most bodies of water, watching the sun set over the lake is a special occasion that just so happens to occur daily. Lucky us!
There aren't a lot of things more fun than watching the sun vanish over the water after a day full of activities on the lake before settling down to camp overnight with friends or family.

Lake Sakakawea State Park is located on the southern shore of the lake.
There's a swim beach, hiking, and plenty to do there as well. We suggest a multi-night camping adventure in the middle of the week, when there will be much fewer campers and vacationers onsite.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. It's tough, if not impossible, to list them all in a single, easy-to-read article, but rest assured: most of them are wondrous and breathtakingly lovely, offering peace, quiet, and respite from real life - even if only for a little while.

Enter Lake George, a stunning natural lake found in north-central North Dakota that reaches incredible depths of up to (or should I say "down to"?) 150 feet. It's also a bit of a natural wonder for more than just its depths - it's also about half as salty as the ocean, making it a one-of-a-kind beauty in the Peace Garden State.
Interestingly, this lake is little-known despite its uniqueness; ask most folks from around here and a lot of them won't recognize the name (unless you use the nickname it's rightfully earned itself: "Salt Lake"). This is a good thing, though - it ensures that rarely will we ever have to worry about crowds, especially if one arrives during the week.
There are two properties located on or near the lake: Streeter Memorial State Park, and the privately owned Lake George Wildlife Refuge. Streeter Memorial State Park is located on the northwestern side of the lake, and it allows for some awesome opportunities to get out and enjoy the outdoors. Thanks to its saltiness, there are no fish to catch – so this lake is purely decorative, other than the hiking and camping nearby.
The water is clean and clear, offering a cool respite from reality if not for just a little while. It typically reflects the brilliant blue of the clear sky above it, though, on cloudy days, this effect might be muted a smidge. Nevertheless, it’s an amazingly beautiful place to visit, hike, and otherwise enjoy. Nature is awesome – North Dakotan nature is even better than that!
The nearest towns are Dawson, Streeter, and Tappen. Between the three of them, you’ll find a selection of awesome places to eat, stay, and play. North Dakota is an amazing state and it’s honestly terribly underrated – it's so much more than most folks give it credit for, and Lake George is an excellent example of this. Even many locals have never heard of it – it's that hidden!
