Apple season in the mountains is full of fun and surprises for the entire family. From lively events to hand-picked apples, and fresh treats like apple butter and cider, apple orchards are a great way to enjoy the outdoors while make lasting memories. And if you only visit one apple orchard in the Tar Heel State all year, make it The Orchard at Altapass.
Before you ever arrive at this historic orchard, you'll be loving the day. That's because to get here, you'll hop on the Blue Ridge Parkway for a picturesque journey. No matter how long or short your time on the parkway, you'll know when you've arrived at The Orchard at Altapass because you will see it in full view from your car on the Parkway just above.
Prepare for a day like no other. Wednesday through Sunday there is so much going on at this fun apple farm that you may have trouble deciding where to start!
We suggest popping inside to check out the activity. Throughout the day it changes, but in season, you'll often find local bands and some of the finest mountain Bluegrass you've heard.
Don't be surprised if you find yourself tappin' your toes, or even clogging to the rhythm.
Next, head out for an adventure in the orchards. This historic orchard has been farmed for 110 years (since 1908), and may be one of the most mature orchards in the state.
If you'd prefer to get your boots on the ground, then you can explore on foot. The map found online at this link labels the orchards by apple variety.
Or, if you prefer a guided tour, you can take a hayride and enjoy the long range views of the Blue Ridge Mountains as well as viewing the orchard. Remember, whether you walk or ride, you'll need to purchase a bag before you go in order to be able to pick your own.
After visiting the orchard, head back to check out the store and the restaurant, which is called the Apple Core Grill. If it's well past lunch when you arrive, then head to the ice cream counter instead.
The iconic and historic Orchard at Altapass is a must-visit each summer and fall, whether it's an incidental stop while you're on the Blue Ridge Parkway, or you choose to make it a day trip destination.
