North Carolina has over 500 farms and roadside stands where you can pick your own, farm fresh food. With such a daunting number, it can be hard to decide where to go. Even with this super handy state guide from NC Farm Fresh, it's still difficult to narrow it down. Here are the seven best places to pick your own food in North Carolina.
1. Stepp's Hillcrest Orchard
At Stepp's in Hendersonville you have 38-acres of pick your own apples with over 22 varieties. In the Fall you can also pick your own pumpkin, explore the corn maze, and ride a wagon through the orchard!
2. Apple Hill Orchard & Cider Mill
Right near Morganton you'll find Apple Hill Orchard. You can pick your own apples, visit the country store, find sweet goodies at the bakery, and pick up a gallon of fresh apple cider for your Halloween party.
3. Justus Orchard
In Hendersonville you'll find Justus Orchard. Surrounded by beautiful mountains, you'll love a cool fall day of picking apples. Children can enjoy playing by the pond and seeing the ducks or taking the cow train to explore the orchard. There's also the Apple House where you can find pre-picked apples, jams, jellies, honey, and preserves. It's also pumpkin season, and you can find your perfect one here.
4. Indigo Farms
On the Eastern side of the state, you'll find Indigo Farms in Calabash. While the pick your own season is in the spring and summer, with fresh blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries, fall is fun too. Kids can enjoy pumpkin patch hayrides, pig races, haymaze, and bonfires at night.
5. Lineberger's Maple Springs Farm
While the majority of produce here is pre-picked, you can still find some of the freshest goodies year-round in Dallas. In the fall the market is stocked with gourds, apples, sweet potatoes, and muscadine grapes. Children can enjoy a hayride for $5 with a pumpkin included.
6. Sky Top Orchard
Sky Top Orchard in Flat Rock is more than just a pick your own farm. They offer gorgeous, 360 mountain views, a barnyard area with sheep, goats, and chickens, as well as a neat bamboo forest to explore. Fall is the perfect time to pick up some fresh apples, a pumpkin, and sweet apple cider.
7. Carrigan Farms
In Mooresville you'll find more than just a great pick your own farm. Carrigan Farms has a quarry and a waterfall. In the Fall, get a good thrill when the farm becomes Scarrigan Farms. You can enjoy apple picking, hayrides, nighttime hayrides, and all of the beauty of this unique farm.
