The next time you're in Durham, or looking for a day trip destination that's fun for the whole family, head to the Museum of Life and Science. You could spend an entire day exploring the museum and all that it has to offer but you'd be remiss to skip the museum's enormous butterfly house. Upon its completion in 2000, it was the largest butterfly house in the country.
It may no longer hold that distinction, however, at 5,000 square feet, it still makes quite the impression.
It's also more than three stories tall! Several walls of the butterfly house are constructed of glass panels that are 35 feet tall. It's quite a structure!
And is filled with some of the most delicate creatures on earth.
Not only butterflies, but also scores of plant life. Afterall, what's a butterfly without flowers?
If you love both butterflies AND flowers, then you've come to the right place, that's for sure.
Come at just the right time of year and you'll possibly see butterflies in all their life cycles.
Expect to see some other creatures, too, like moths!
What are you waiting for? Scadaddle on over to Durham to the Museum of Life and Science to tour the largest butterfly house in North Carolina.
