If you had to guess would you place the largest zoo in the United States right here in the Tar Heel State? Well, it is! Not only that: our North Carolina Zoo is the largest natural habitat zoo in the entire world and it's definitely worth a day trip to check it out. The attention to detail, the exceptionally large natural habitats created for the 1,800 animals that live here, and their heath and well being make this zoo a feel good experience when you visit.
Set some time aside this year to head to Asheboro to the North Carolina Zoo, whether you've already been but it has been a minute since you've returned - or you've never been at all. You're sure to have a day filled with fun adventure at the zoo.
The 3,100-arce park features mainly animals from North America and Africa. Upon arrival, you'll have the option to enter through either continent's entrance.
The zoo is open year-round. But please note, the African entrance is only open April through October; while the North American entrance is open all year. Parking is always free at the zoo, by the way.
There's so much to see and do here, but you should plan on a Zoofari ride through the Watani Grasslands, a section of the park only explorable via the Zoofari.
Zoofari tours run only Thursday through Sunday and tickets are limited. Get yours in advance at this link.
The zoo has more than 50 species of animals, reptiles, and fowl from around the world. The kiddos will love learning all about each one of them.
Speaking of little ones, there are some can't-miss special experiences for them (that Mom and Dad will also love)! Take a ride on the endangered species carousel, feed a giraffe, visit the Kaleidoscope Butterfly Garden, and check out the kids' Treehouse Trek, to name a few.
Whether you enter through the Africa entrance or start your day at the North American entry, you'll get the opportunity to see all of the exhibits in the zoo. So it's not like you have to choose one over the other.
When it's time to take a break and refuel, there are plenty of options. The zoo has three restaurants that are open year-round. Plus another eight restaurants and snack bars that are open seasonally.
Of course, shopping galore is available throughout the park with many opportunities to pick up souvenirs and keepsakes of your visit.
How about it? How long has it been since you visited the world's largest natural habitat zoo at the North Carolina Zoo?
Purchase tickets in advance online or wait and get them at the gate upon arrival. Either way, you'll be pleasantly surprised at just how ridiculously affordable the largest zoo in the United States (and world!) is to visit! While you're nearby, go walk across one of the oldest historic covered bridges in all of North Carolina!
