Recently, I received an email from my aunt about a songwriter’s retreat in her town. She knew my son would be interested. After checking it out and speaking with my son about it, we began making plans for him to attend, which gave me an opportunity to get away and spend some time with my aunt. She lives in Kernersville, North Carolina which is just under three hours from where we live in South Carolina. It made for the perfect weekend trip in North Carolina, and I got to explore Kernersville with her while my son went to the retreat.

The downtown area of Kernersville, North Carolina is walkable and just as charming as it can be. As small towns in North Carolina go, it has a population of over 27,000 people but surely has that small-town feel.
Our first stop in town was the Musten & Crutchfield Food Market on North Main Street, which is a small grocery store that's been serving the community since 1938, offering homemade goods from local vendors.

You can find honey, sauces, cut-to-order meats, fudge, candy, and more at this cute little market. It's a local gem you don't want to miss.
Next to the market, my aunt took me to one of her favorite shops, The Station @ Main, which was full of great gift items, boutique clothing, jewelry, handbags, and many other treasures. They were having a good sale and we enjoyed talking with the friendly, helpful staff.

We ate lunch at my aunt's home, but for dinner we went to Cagney's Kitchen. It's on South Main a bit of a distance from the downtown area, so we drove there.

The service and food were excellent. I had the gyro platter, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
After dinner, we parked downtown and perused some of the classic cars that were there for a cruise-in event. We caught the tail-end of it so only got to see a few.

On the way back to my aunt's home, we stopped by Harmon Park, which features a kids' playground, a picnic shelter, a gazebo, and a memorial fountain.

Next to the park is the Kernersville Little Theatre, which I noticed will be offering a showing soon of the classic Beauty and the Beast, which sure would be a blast to see.

I also passed by another incredible attraction I'd love to explore on a future visit, the Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden.

As you can see, there is an abundance of things to do in Kernersville, North Carolina, and my little trip there just barely even scratched the surface. I did stay overnight with my aunt, but Kernersville just as easily makes for a great day trip in North Carolina. If you want more time than a day or to rest through the night before heading back home, consider booking the loft in this cute garden cottage in Kernersville.
