Back in the good ol' days, when train cars ran supreme and rail was the main method of transportation, railways, train stations and even trains themselves brought a unique experience to every passenger that hopped aboard. Today, the legacy of the train is slowly dying from American culture, and has become a distant memory of the past. Yet, there's one restaurant in North Carolina that aims to preserve and cling to that culture.
The Clarksville Station began as a railroad passenger and freight car in the 1920'. She's seen many of trips, mainly riding through south central Virginia and North Central North Carolina. In 1973, the Clarksville Station caboose was dismantled and moved to her original location. Located in Roxboro, today, she serves as a unique atmosphere for diners looking to relish in the glorious days of railways.
The Clarksville Station operates as a nostalgic site for train depots and train cars. You get a little bit of both here! It was originally opened in 1975 and was closed in 2011 after the previous owners retired. Today, it is run by the Adler family and serves a variety of southern fare.
Part of the restaurant is located in the train, which is a special experience for train buffs. Many rave about the crab legs and the fresh salad bar.
The restaurant serves lunch daily from 11-2 (except Saturday) and dinner from 5-8:30 on weekdays and till 9 on weekends. If you're looking to try a bit of everything, there's also a buffet style option.
If you have a sweet tooth, the pecan pie is a favorite dessert item. Anyway you put it, you really can't beat the experience of dining in a train car! While foodies might not love the lax and welcoming style (don't expect a high end environment) train buffs love to experience history and grab a bite. You can't beat the atmosphere and the totally one-of-a-kind experience of grabbing lunch or dinner inside a train car!
Talk about unique, North Carolina has no shortage of one of a kind dining options suited for any kind of person or history buff! Have you been here before or want to visit now?
