The best downtowns in North Carolina are found in its small towns. That's because the backbone of of the state is found in all of the small towns in North Carolina -- and we have so many to love! (We know there are hundreds more that deserve love too!)
1. Banner Elk
Tiny. Oozing with charm. Walkable streets filled with a few shops, galleries, and restaurants. Banner Elk has it all. Nestled at the base of Beech Mountain, adjacent to Sugar Mountain (two fantastic ski resorts) and only minutes from waterfalls, Grandfather Mountain, Linville Gorge, and more... it's a wonderful spot to visit for the day — or longer. 2. Black Mountain
No matter how long it's been since your last visit to Black Mountain, you can rest assured this little mountain town is still overflowing with hospitality and charm. The streets are filled with smiling people (locals and tourists alike) who just can't get enough. Shop. Dine. Enjoy! 3. Little Switzerland
Tiny but mighty, Little Switzerland belongs on everyone's bucket list. The town boasts only a handful of shops, galleries, and places to dine. But all of them are top-notch, yet very down to earth. From here, visitors can hop on the Diamondback 226 - if they dare. The 38-mile motorcycle and sports car touring route is slammed with curves requiring some strategic skills. For those who aren't up for the curvy challenge, Little Switzerland sits right on the Blue Ridge Parkway (perfect for a slow, scenic drive) and has views from many parts of town that are unparalleled in any other nearby town. 4. West Jefferson
There was a time when West Jefferson had the only cheese factory in the Southeastern United States. It's still here and right in the middle of town! Take a tour, go by some cheese at the factory store. Then, tour this delightful small town on foot to explore shops and restaurants galore. When you're finished, drive over to the Church of the Frescoe, St. Mary's Episcopal one of two churches in the area that display incredible frescoes like you don't normally see in America.
5. Bryson City
Nestled down in a mountain valley with mountains surrounding all sides of the town, Bryson City is a gem to explore. Make a reservation and take one of the many themed excursions aboard the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. (The train even has a "Tarzan" ride where you get off and go ziplining through the forest!) Come back and set foot to pavement as you walk through the quaint downtown. Spend more than a day. You'll find tons of options from hotels to B&Bs to AirBnBs in Bryson City. The main eastern entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains is only a few miles away, and so is Fontana Dam. 6. Blowing Rock
One can easily spend an entire day in the mountain town of Blowing Rock. The tiny downtown includes history museums, oodles of shops with everything from eclectic items, handcrafted works of art, clothing, gifts, and more. Galleries and restaurants round out the selection of places to visit. For four or maybe five city blocks... Blowing Rock just plain rocks! 7. Dillsboro
The historic little town of Dillsboro is found on the banks of the Tuckaseege River. It was founded as a railroad town in the late 1880s. The tracks from the Murphy Branch still run through town. With a population of under 300 people, Dillsboro has a special appeal for travelers. The shops and restaurants here are wonderful and the walkable streets will charm you in the best way possible. Many nearby locals make it a holiday tradition to make a trek over to Dillsboro which is akin to walking right into a Christmas movie set.
