For those looking for a beautiful way to spend a day in the big city, it would be hard to go wrong with a trip to Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens. It's a great mix of art, nature, and urban energy. It's at once relaxing and invigorating, and we think it is the best sculpture park in New York City. To learn more about this destination, which is great for residents of New York City and visitors alike, keep reading below.
Socrates Sculpture Park was founded in 1986 by the sculptor Mark di Suvero. The waterfront park sits on the site of a former landfill in Long Island City, Queens.
The park’s aim has always been to create an art space that could be accessed by the community and provide support for artists.
In 1998, it was designated as a New York City public park, giving the land security for multiple generations.
Currently, the park has up for view topical exhibitions and contemporary public art, plus plenty of programming that makes use of the five-acre waterfront it rests upon.
A good portion of the art at Socrates is built on-site at an outdoor studio space, so visitors can often witness the art-making process in action. Pretty cool!
Admission to the park, and all that comes along with it—exhibitions, gardens, and programs—is completely free, and open to all ages.
This spring and summer, we implore New Yorkers to take some time out of their busy lives and spend an afternoon at Socrates Sculpture Park. Trust us, those that do will not be disappointed. While visiting this sculpture park in New York City, why not stick around for another day and check out Brooklyn Flea, which we think might just be the best flea market in New York City, or maybe the entire state. And for those looking for a place to stay in New York, we recommend Fairfield Inn by Marriott, New York Manhattan/Financial District.
