Buffalo is home to several historical landmarks and historically relevant destinations. This place might just be the coolest of them all! If interacting with history is your cup of tea, we urge you to check out the Buffalo Heritage Village. Never heard of it? Read on for more information!
Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village is located in Amherst at 3755 Tonawanda Creek Road.
BNHV is an open-air museum with over 50,000 pieces in its collection!
The mission of Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village? To urge people to disconnect for awhile in order to reconnect to the past.
In their own words, "to preserve and interpret the story of Buffalo Niagara for the people of today and the community of tomorrow."
So... what's this place all about?
Glad you asked! The Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village is a charming community made up of 35 acres and 11 historic buildings. Each building has been moved from its original site and preserved at BNHV.
It's so much more than a museum.
It's a glimpse into living history! Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village is a popular destination for families and school groups. It's not hard to see why! Each building in the village is maintained and operated the way it would have been in the past.
Check out interactive workshops and view live demonstrations.
There are several unique sights to see at BNHV, from watching blacksmiths demonstrate their trade...
...to seeing hay being made!
The village hosts several special events throughout the year.
Costumed interpreters, dancers, and craftspeople are typically on hand at the BNHV events! One of the most popular of which is the Scottish Festival and Highland Games.
Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village is a great stop for people of all ages.
Adults will appreciate learning about history through a different lens, while children often flock to the farmstead to see the animals!
Another great event at BNHV? Civil War Days re-enactments!
Civil War Days Re-enactment events are always a hit at the village! Children and adults alike can get into character and watch the war unfold on the village's beautiful grounds.
There's so much to see at this open-air museum, it's almost too much to list!
But hey, we'll try! There is a church, a one-room schoolhouse, barber shop, several homes with a working 19th century stove, a garden, pavilion, exhibit building, educational building, and so much more! While the open-air portion of the museum is currently closed for the season, we urge you to check out the indoor exhibits and mark your calendar for when BNHV fully reopens in the spring!
Can't wait to check this place out? We don't blame you! Head over to the BNHV website to check out upcoming events. Tip: there's a Victorian Séance Series coming up that looks incredible!
