When it comes to bridges in New York, covered bridges tend to get a lot of the love. We get it. They're scenic, they're unique, and they tend to have fascinating histories. But there's so many other cool bridges in New York that are worth checking out! Here's a few of our favorites.
1. Tappan Zee Bridge - Tarrytown
The Tappan Zee Bridge is special because it's the longest bridge in New York. Officially named the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, it's three miles in length. It's a gorgeous sight, particularly at night when it's all lit up. From the bridge, you get stunning views of the Hudson River.
2. Downsville Covered Bridge - Downsville
We couldn't do a list of bridges in New York without including one covered bridge. The Downsville Bridge dates back to 1854, though it was extensively restored in 1998. We included it on a list of our favorite covered bridges in New York.
3. Walkway Over the Hudson - Poughkeepsie
The Walkway Over the Hudson is one of the most unique attractions in New York. Also known as the Poughkeepsie Bridge, it's the world's largest pedestrian bridge over water. The views are magnificent and it's a great 1.28-mile walk!
4. Fall Creek Suspension Bridge - Ithaca
This one is not for the faint of heart! Located on Cornell's campus, the Fall Creek Suspension Bridge is 140 feet above ground. It's got beautiful views of several waterfalls and the Fall Creek Gorge. The bridge's bounces and sways may have your stomach churning, but we promise the vantage point is worth it.
5. Pont De Rennes Bridge - Rochester
The Ponte De Rennes Bridge in Rochester has some of the best views in New York. You'll feel miles away from urban life, even though it's right in the middle of the city. The natural views of the gorge and waterfall below are incredible!
6. Mohawk Valley Gateway Overlook Bridge - Amsterdam
This bridge is so spectacular that the American Planning Association named it one of the Great Places in America in 2019 . This 511-foot bridge spans the Mohawk Rive. As you walk along the path, you'll see several informative stopping points that explore the region's history.
7. Ausable Chasm Bridge - Clinton County
Many in New York are familiar with the Ausable Chasm. The two mile-gorge is one of the country's oldest tourist attractions. It's often called "the little Grand Canyon of the East" for its beauty and scale. Access to the area's trails and water requires an entrance fee, but one of the best views is actually free. Standing from the pedestrian bridge, you get an amazing view of this natural wonder in New York.
8. Brooklyn Bridge - Brooklyn
The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the greatest man made wonders of all time. This six-lane bridge is an icon of New York City that is prominently featured on souvenirs. It carries more than 100,000 cars a day, but is also open for pedestrian usage.
