For many of us, summer means spending time outdoors. While you can always go hiking or camping, there is nothing like spending a summer day on the water. Abiquiu Lake is one of the best swimming holes in the Land of Enchantment. However, this isn’t a natural lake, but rather a man-made reservoir with 5,200 surface acres and clear blue water. There’s no doubt that time playing in this water will make you feel like a kid on a summer vacation.
Abiquiu Lake is located in northern New Mexico. You’ll find it on Highway 84 near the small town of Abiquiu.
This large lake is technically a reservoir created by a dam in the Chama River. It provides up to 5,200 surface acres of water for you to enjoy all summer long.
When you first arrive, you’ll immediately be met with gorgeous views. This lake is surrounded by beautiful red sandstone formations and even if you don’t get into the water, you'll enjoy sitting back and admiring New Mexico’s natural beauty.
However, we highly suggest you jump on in. The blue water is awfully tempting …
… and the unique cliffs surrounding the lake have become a popular spot for cliff jumping.
Bring a boat, kayak, canoe, or stand-up paddle board and spend some time exploring all around the lake.
You should also bring your fishing pole as this lake is well-known for its fishing. Be prepared to catch all types of fish including bass, catfish, walleye, trout, and sunfish.
Abiquiu Lake is the perfect place for a day trip. Spend time on the water and have a picnic with your family for a delightful summer day.
But if you want to stay a little longer, consider camping at Riana Campground, which is located on a 150-foot bluff overlooking the reservoir.
At this campground, you’ll find 52 campsites with a handful of sites offering both electric and water hookups. There is also a playground and a dump station to make your stay even more enjoyable and convenient.
During the summer months, there’s nothing like visiting Abiquiu Lake, the ultimate man-made swimming hole in northern New Mexico. Time in this water will certainly bring out your inner child.
