We’ve already introduced you to 8 New Mexico wineries in spectacular settings. However, the Land of Enchantment is filled with pretty vineyards and wineries just waiting to be discovered. What better way to spend an afternoon than sitting out on a patio, appreciating the sun, the scenery, and a great glass of vino? For your next day trip, head to one of these 9 beautiful wineries:
1. Vivác Winery (Dixon)
Outside this winery’s tasting room, you’ll enjoy dramatic views and a charming patio. Inside, you’ll discover truffles, handmade cheese, and – of course – wine. This winery is best known for its reds. Try the Pinot Noir! The tasting room is located at: 2075, NM-68
Dixon. For more info.
2. Shattuck Vineyard (Caballo)
Vineyards boasting lake and mountain views are hard to come by in New Mexico, but you can enjoy both at Shattuck Vineyard. The Consequence of Zinfandel – an estate wine - is a standout. This hidden gem is located at 43 Bridle Rd in Caballo. For more info.
3. Ponderosa Winery (Ponderosa)
Hidden in the Jemez Mountains, this cute and peaceful winery produces excellent Riesling and Pinot Noir. Its wines have won numerous awards and tastings are complimentary. You’ll find the winery at 3171 Hwy 290 in Ponderosa. For more info.
4. La Vina Winery (Anthony)
This vineyard hosts annual wine festivals each spring (April 22nd and 23rd in 2017) and fall. The events provide an excellent excuse to check out the selection at this winery, which lies on the Texas border. Call ahead and you can take a tour. If you’re a fan of sweet wines, be sure to taste La Piñata. The winery is located at 4201 NM-28 in La Union. For more info.
5. La Chiripada (Dixon)
La Chiripada is the oldest winery in Northern New Mexico. This family-run operation has been extremely successful over the years, earning awards in contests such as the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition. The Viognier was especially well received there and the semi-sweet Primavera pairs well with chile – an important consideration! While the winery itself is in Dixon (for more info), you can also visit its other tasting room in Taos at 103 Bent Street.
6. Amaro Winery (Las Cruces)
Fancy some entertainment with your wine? Head over to Amaro, where you’ll find weekly events like open mics and live music. This family-owned winery produces a pleasing Tempranillo and a Chenin Blanc with notes of fruit and honey. The winery offers a set (reasonable) price for you to sample all of their available wines if you’re feeling indecisive… or thirsty! The tasting room is located at 402 South Melendres Street in Las Cruces. For more info.
7. Acequia Vineyards and Winery (Corrales)
Located in the charming village of Corrales, this winery provides a great little escape from the stresses of life. Soak in expansive mountain views from the patio, as you sip on a Merlot or Chardonnay. If you call at least a day in advance of your visit, you can set up five wine tastings paired with either cheese or chocolate.
You’ll find Acequia Vineyards at 240 Reclining Acres Road in Corrales. For more info.
8. Guadalupe Vineyards (San Fidel)
This is pretty much the only winery in the area but, despite the lack of competition, the wines here meet a high standard and have won awards in a variety of state and nationwide competitions. The vineyard specializes in dry Riesling and Gewürztraminer and the setting is scenic – near the bottom of Mount Taylor. Call for an appointment before you drive to 188 San Jose Loop in San Fidel to check this place out. For more info.
9. Tularosa Vineyards and Winery (Tularosa)
Relax at picnic tables under the shade of pecan trees or kick back on the covered patio and sip one of the reds for which this winery is best known. Definitely sample the Black Muscat. The winery is located at 23 Coyote Canyon Road in Tularosa. For more info.
