It's well known that New Mexicans tend to have a sweet tooth. We have plenty of providers for our sweet tooth fix in the Land of Enchantment, but this one stands out above the rest. This gigantic candy store is recognizable to anyone who has been to Albuquerque, as it's often referred to as "the big candy store with the gigantic candy cane outside." Though this candy maker has opened up another location, the original is still an Albuquerque institution serving up endless sweets for decades, and you'll want to keep coming back to get your fix.

This old fashioned candy shop has been satisfying our sweet tooth since 1956.
This gigantic store will have you feeling like a kid again, but the red and white retro decor will have you feeling like you've transported back to the simpler times of the '50s.
George Buffett and his family wanted to pursue the American dream by starting their own business, and candy was their first choice.
After graduating college with a degree in business administration, George wanted to pursue a business and his mother suggested candy making. This turned out to be harder than he thought it'd be, but George persevered and was able to open what is now one of New Mexico's most popular candy stores in 1956, just five years after graduating.
George worked for the business until his passing in 2012, but Buffett's brought him more than just business success—it brought him his wife. Jeannette and George met when Jeannette started working at the shop in college, and the two went on to have three children. Their children now run the business, and the grandchildren have shown interest in taking over as well. Buffett's is a family name.
All of the candy at Buffett's is made to eat right now, not later.
Buffett's Candies does not use any preservatives in their candies, so they're always made fresh and are ready to eat immediately. Buffett's is committed to using only the finest ingredients, including U.S. Grade AA butter.

Buffett's is known for a few specialities, and one that must not be looked over is their piñon candies.
Making piñon candies is no quick endeavor—it takes 75 years for piñon plants to produce enough nuts to use on a large scale, making piñon nuts incredibly valuable. This smooth-tasting nut offers a much more rich flavor than the pine nut, and New Mexicans consider it a delicacy. Buffett's uses piñons in their buttery piñon rolls, caramels, toffee, clusters, and more.
This candy maker also offers all of your favorites that grandma used to make.
Buffett's has a variety of brittles, but many have a unique flavor twist such as green chile or pecan brittle. For a more traditional chocolate, you'll find chocolate chews, chocolate covered nuts, and traditional cream chocolates.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. As someone who has a sweet tooth, I love bakeries and pastry shops. As long as something is homemade, it quickly becomes my favorite treat! If you like sweets like me and find yourself in the village of Chama in northern New Mexico, you must make a stop at the incredibly charming Wilder BakeShop. In fact, you'll most likely smell some delicious scents wafting through the streets of Chama before you step foot inside.
Wilder BakeShop is owned and operated by talented self-taught baker Jazzmyn Cramer. It was almost a lifelong dream of hers to open up her own European-style patisserie and cafe and, well, she succeeded! She also makes it a point to procure ethically sourced ingredients for the pastries she makes.
Everything is made from scratch which makes all the difference in quality and taste. Whether it's flaky, buttery croissants, fruit-filled galettes, or perhaps a divine lemon cake with lemon buttercream, whatever you end up trying will have you come back for more.
Of course, coffee is always an option here as well. A steaming hot vanilla latte is a great way to accompany a treat like a shortbread bar or a cream tart.
When you visit this incredible patisserie in Chama and try one of the from-scratch baked goods, you'll want to share it with friends. I urge you to take a few things back home with you to share.
