The weather in New Jersey is generally pretty reliable: four distinct seasons, hot summers, gorgeous fall colors, some snow in the winter. But in late January of 2016, New Jersey was hit with Winter Storm Jonas -- also known as the Blizzard of 2016 -- a relentless blizzard that dumped over 30 inches of snow in parts of the state. The worst blizzard in New Jersey happened 5 years ago, and today we're remembering this epic storm.
The winter of 2015-16 was not a particularly snowy one -- at least not until January 22, 2016.
Between January 22-24, New Jersey was hammered with an average of 28.1 inches of snow, setting a new winter storm record for the state.
The Blizzard of '96 held the previous title; 2016 snowfall totals edged past 1996 totals by less than half an inch.
Somerset and Morris Counties had some of the highest snowfall totals, with several towns reporting over 30 inches of snow.
For reference, the highest snowfall total ever recorded in New Jersey was 34 inches in Cape May, back in 1899.
Everyone experienced the storm differently.
Wildwood Crest reported just 4.5 inches of snow, along with rain. Atlantic City got 13.4 inches; Vernon got 14 inches; Franklin Lakes got 25.3 inches; Morris Plains got 33 inches; and Pitman got 18.5 inches. This variability isn't unusual for New Jersey, where snowfall patterns are largely dependent on where you're located in the state. (Towns along the coastline rarely see significant snow, while the interior of the state can see substantial snowfall.)
But it wasn't just snowy -- it was incredibly windy, too.
Wind speeds topped 50 miles per hour along the coast, with Harvey Cedars on LBI being hit by 64 mile-per-hour gusts.
The worst blizzard in New Jersey topped the charts as a Category 5 storm, the highest classification on the scale. Do you remember the Blizzard of 2016? But none compare to the Blizzard of 1996, which was truly a harrowing experience.
