The Garden State may be small, but it's the densest state in the United States. Roads crisscross our little state everywhere you look. However, if you've spent any time on the highways here, you know all roads are most definitely not created equal. Some long drives are little more than a simple journey along a highway dotted with rest stops and chain restaurants, of course. But we have plenty of amazing scenic drives in New Jersey, too.
One of our favorites is Route 40 in New Jersey. It's also known as the Harding Highway, and it's a quiet retreat through Salem County that will take you past some of the state's best rural attractions. The main selling point of Rt 40 NJ is its stunning views of Sawmill Park. This unique county park is filled with not just natural beauty, but also with amazing works of art. The entire journey down Route 40 NJ covers about 54 miles, before terminating at either the Hamilton Mill or the Delaware Memorial Bridge, depending on which way you're traveling. No matter what way you are heading, you're in for some amazing views.
Of course, we all know the beautiful landscape in South Jersey is gorgeous no matter where you are... but we've got to say, it's particularly magnificent if you take a detour onto this scenic road.
Route 40 in New Jersey is a small portion of a much larger instate road, and it'll take you past some amazing landmarks. One of the rural sights you'll see here is Cowtown Rodeo.
This cowboy show is one of the most unique places in New Jersey. You can catch the Cowtown Rodeo every week during the summer in Pilesgrove, the rodeo capital of NJ.
If you're traveling in the summertime, another must-visit attraction is Cream Valley Custard in Woodstown, just off Route 40 NJ.
Cream Valley Custard serves up both custard and basic lunch fare like hot dogs. It's a charming old-school spot that feels like a step back in time.
Adults in your traveling party will be thrilled by Bellview Winery in Landisville. This classy craft winery is a major player in New Jersey's burgeoning wine industry.
Bellview Winery offers up tastings of more than two dozen wines, and you can also book events here. It's a beautiful setting that makes for a perfect roadside stop.
The Richland Train Station is a historic train station that hosts annual Santa Express rides each winter.

The fun never ends on Rt 40 NJ! Our final stop is the gorgeous Sawmill Park, also in Richland. This tiny park is surrounded by natural beauty, but has a few unexpected attractions as well.
This inventive art installation has some of the most creative play areas in the entire state.
You won't want to miss the Tree Monument. This tribute is dedicated to a centuries-old tree that stood in this spot until 2015.
This is one of the best places to see public art in New Jersey and a wonderful way to wrap up this trip down Route 40 NJ.
