New Jersey has some great Halloween attractions from "real" haunted asylums to theatrical houses of horror. Whatever your thrill level, there is something in our state that will scare you to your satisfaction. If you're feeling brave, visit one of the following spooky spots.
1. Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital, Parsippany
This abandoned insane asylum once housed songwriter, Woodie Guthrie. It also housed thousands of other patients over the years, many of whom were subjected to inhumane practices. Demolition on the site has begun and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
2. Shades of Death Road, Great Meadows
There are several stories about how this road came to be named, all involving murder. Several spots along this road are believed to be haunted, including the aptly named Ghost Lake.
3. The Seabrook-Wilson House, Port Monmouth
This home was a tavern during the Revolutionary War, frequented by British troops. Owners would relay information overhead to Colonial troops, earning this building the nickname, "Spy House". It has been called the most haunted home in America.
4. Brighton Asylum, Passaic
This year-round haunted attraction has been called one of the scariest places in America by The Today Show. The warehouse suposedly housed mental patients at one time, but it is now staffed by costumed creepers that are sure to give you nightmares.
5. Scare Farm, Hillsborough
Guests can get their thrills and chills on a haunted hayride or either of two walk-through attractions. Their slogan is "Harvesting Your Fears" and they do not disappoint.
6. Devil's Tree, Bernards Township
Some say this tree was used for lynchings, others say that a man hanged himself here after killing his family. It is generally believed to be cursed. Legend has it that those who disrespect or deface the tree will face impending doom.
7. Haunted Scarehouse, Wharton
One of the more popular haunted houses in New Jersey, choose from several attractions including a terrifying escape room. Do you have the skills and smarts to make it out alive?
8. Clinton Road, West Milford
The legends of this haunted road include mysterious chanting, ghost sightings and strange creatures. Dark and desolate, it makes for a chilling drive at night. Some say many bodies have been disposed of along the road.
9. The Flanders Hotel, Ocean City
This lovely hotel on the beach has become fairly famous for its haunted history. Named after a cemetery in Belgium, this hotel once hosted covert crime boss meetings in its catacombs. It has also hosted several ghosts, the most famous of which is a young red haired woman. There have also been reports of a small child and a middle aged man haunting the premises. These spirits can be heard laughing throughout the building and have even been spotted by numerous guests.
10. Old Tennent Cemetery, Manalapan
This historic cemetery was once the host of a bloody Revolutionary War battle, the Battle of Monmouth. The church acted as a makeshift hospital and both the building and grounds are said to be haunted.
