When you think of New Jersey, natural springs may not be the first things that come to mind. We actually have several throughout the state, including the infamous Blue Hole near Vineland and Devil's Hole near Cedar Grove. Though they're surrounded by legend, neither of these are safe for swimming. If you're looking to dive in to a spectacular natural spring in our state, you have to head to The Highlands Natural Pool in Ringwood.
This unique spring-fed pool is surrounded by the beauty of Norvin Green State Forest. It was first opened over 80 years ago as part of the nation's first racially integrated camp (Camp Midvale). Some say Highlands Pool has healing properties, but at the very least visitors will find themselves relaxed in the midst of nature. The pool is not treated with chemicals but the water is constantly refreshed by the stream that fills it.
The natural pool is currently run by a non-profit group, the Community Association of the Highlands, which offers day passes as well as seasonal memberships. Being a fed by a natural spring, the pool is not heated and the water temperature rarely rises above 65 degrees. Brisk and bracing, the temperature is actually quite refreshing on a hot summer day. The depth of the pool ranges from under 4' in the shallow section to over 10' at the deep end. It's the perfect place to cool down after a long hike in the surrounding area.
If you're not much of a swimmer, there is still plenty to do at the pool. You'll find snacks, drinks, and a picnic area, along with a playground, ping pong tables, volleyball court and softball field. There are also board games to borrow and a variety of nature programs available for children ages 5 and up.
As the only pool of its kind in the area, and as an important part of history, everyone in New Jersey should visit this natural spring-fed pool at least once. Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. Why I Love It: Fact: Airplanes are notoriously dry, dry, dry. No matter how much water I drink both before and during the flight, I always find myself in a hydration deficit for days. The area of New Jersey bordering the Delaware River, across the water from Philadelphia, is probably one of the least explored among many Garden State residents. Generally considered a Philly suburb, it can be a big haul from some of the largest areas of the state, but for those who make the trip from up north, you'll find some amazing hidden gems. One of my favorites is Palmyra Cove Nature Park, a uniquely developed oasis in the middle of a highly urban area. This charming getaway features a small museum and the Palmyra Cove Nature Trail, a beautiful 2.2-mile trail that will take you to one of the area's most beautiful beaches. They've really carved something special out of the busy area at this hidden park in New Jersey, and the best part is it's all completely free.
The Palmyra Cove Nature Center is a great hidden oasis, featuring a STEM center that hosts regular educational programs and summer camps. It's a fascinating little spot to visit on a day trip. The park is best known as a frequent visiting ground for Peregrine Falcons, and the birds can be seen on the Falcon Cam and the side of the main building.
The best way to see this hidden oasis, though, is on the 2.2-mile Palmyra Cove Nature Trail. This is an easy hike through the surrounding woods, which leads to a hidden beach, where you'll see some amazing sights. No dogs are allowed on this hike.
This well-maintained trail has several areas covered by boardwalk, making this an ideal beginner's hike for families or anyone who doesn't have too much endurance. It should take less than an hour to complete.
Of course, there's nothing wrong with lingering. There's a wonderful little beach here, with a stunning water view that looks incredible at sunset.
