It's a summer weekend and what does that mean? For many, family fun! The kids are out of school, there's no work until Monday, so why not have a little adventure? I prefer outdoor summer fun, to take advantage of the season's spectacularly warm weather. New Jersey offers countless incredible parks and an abundance of natural beauty, allowing for an immersive experience in nature. One way to discover New Jersey’s wildlife and unique ecosystems is through a visit to Huber Woods Park.
Huber Woods Park is a 375-acre gem overlooking the Navesink River, part of the Monmouth County Parks System.
The park was founded back in 1974.
In addition to the forests, meadows and ponds, you'll find 8 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding.
Biking together as a family is always fun and hiking is even easier to do.
Start discovering the outdoors along the .17-mile Discovery Path which highlights the park's plant life. Then, consider a slightly longer trail.
Most are family-friendly, with the longest trail coming in at 1.6 miles. The most challenging trail is just 1.2 miles, with many elevation changes.
To add to the experience, borrow a free safari backpack with tools to help you explore. Or, pick up a tree challenge backpack and learn about the local flora.
Become a naturalist for a day and record your observations. Turn them in to help scientists keep track of changes.
After you're all hiked out, the fun isn't nearly done! Head to the Environmental Center.
Check out the tadpoles and frogs in the forest room.
The center offers interactive exhibits including one on Lenape culture. Play Native American instruments and try your hand at basket weaving.
You can also enjoy special events, educational programs and live entertainment.
Other buildings include beautiful barns and a reptile house with real live animals.
The Environmental Center and the Reptile House are open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m..
The park itself is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. year-round and until 9 p.m. during peak season. You can find Huber Woods Park at 25 Brown’s Dock Road, Locust (Middletown Township). Visiting is a wonderful way to help teach appreciation and respect for our environment. Kids and adults alike delight in all the park has to offer.
