New Jersey offers a multitude of hikeable lakes but one is a fall favorite. The hike is moderate, coming in at around a manageable four miles with some elevation gains. You'll find scenic views all along your journey and two marked scenic viewpoints. Ready to discover your next autumn adventure?
Hike along Surprise Lake on Bearfort Mountain.
You can walk right along the shore, but there's more...
You'll score incredible views of Greenwood Lake from the Earnest Walter ridge.
Your hike will also take you along the Appalachian Trail for a bit.
Another feature of this hike is the impressive rock outcroppings.
So, how exactly do you take this hike?
Park at the (blue blazed) State Line Trail Head. Take the 1-mile trail to the end and pick up the Appalachian Trail.
Look out for the 1-mile Earnest Walter Trail (yellow blazes), which you'll take back to the State Line Trail.
All you'll need is a trail map and water. A friend and camera would be nice, too.
You'll find this hike at Abram S. Hewitt State Forest in West Milford. For detailed directions and alternative routes, check out NJHiking.com. For a quick walk-through, check out their video below:
