There's nothing quite like visiting a longtime favorite restaurant and stepping back in time. Classic, nostalgic restaurants earn their charm by staying the same over decades, and one of the best examples of this in New Jersey is the legendary Rutt's Hut.
Rutt's Hut has been part of the Clifton landscape since 1928. Abe and Anna Rutt opened the spot to serve the community and make their lifelong dream a reality. They held on to the restaurant until the mid-1970s when it was sold to the family that runs it now.
Though nearly a century has passed since the Rutts opened this restaurant, only a few things have changed! It still feels like you're stepping back in time when you walk in the door.
The restaurant is divided into the original hot dog spot, a bar, and a counter designed for quick take-out service.
Much of the furnishing and decor are original, and if you grew up dining here as a child, you'll recognize it.
Unlike traditional hot-dog stands, Rutt's Hut is a full-service restaurant, and you can order a drink and relax while your food is prepared and served.
So, what makes Rutt's Hut so famous? Their deep fried hot dogs, of course! The original dog, the Ripper, is a local favorite. You can also order an In-And-Out, which is more lightly fried, or a Cremator, which is... well, absolutely charred.
The Daily Meal has called the Ripper the best hot dog in the country multiple times, and it's good enough to eat on its own.
Of course, you can also smother it in your favorite toppings, whether that be mustard, ketchup, cheese, relish, or a combination of ingredients.
Take a trip back in time when you visit Rutt's Hut and you'll feel like you're a kid again.
