We've talked over and over about how New Jersey is a mecca for foodies. You can find some of the best restaurants around the state, and almost every cuisine is featured here. Of course, despite having the goods, New Jersey rarely gets the credit. Instead, the state is regularly overshadowed by nearby cities like New York City and Philadelphia.
Well, no longer. New Jersey has been getting all sorts of wins lately -- first, it was crowned the state with the best pizza, and now a major New Jersey city has been recognized for having some of the best barbecue restaurants available in the country.
It's official: Newark, New Jersey has some of the best barbecue in the country.
The city came in at number 9 on TripAdvisor's list celebrating National Barbecue Month. Newark even beat out hot spots like Austin, Texas and Kansas City (although New Orleans came in at number one).
1. McWhorter BBQ
This is easily one of the top spots in Newark to score barbecue!
2. Pulaski BBQ
With its Portuguese influences, this little restaurant has become a must-visit for BBQ lovers.
3. Elm Street Barbeque II
Add Elm Street Barbeque II to the list of absolutely delicious BBQ restaurants in the area.
4. North Newark Barbeque
Another barbecue hot spot with Portuguese roots, this restaurant serves some of the best beef ribs you can find in the state.
5. South BBQ Restaurant
This restaurant looks simple and unassuming from the outside as it's in a strip mall setting, but trust us, you're going to love the variety of meats here.
And this is honestly just scraping the surface of Newark's barbecue scene. There are so many amazing restaurants in the city, ranging from humble and affordable to more upscale and luxe. Whatever BBQ experience you're looking for, you'll find it in Newark.
