New Jersey is one of the best spots in the world for beaches, if we do say so ourselves - there's a reason there are many beaches out there, but only one Jersey Shore! That being said, not all of New Jersey's beaches are created equal, and some of them get pretty packed in the summer. That makes it all the more wonderful when we discover a hidden gem of a beach just as those hot summer months roll around. That's definitely the case for Bayshore Waterfront Park in Port Monmouth, a small and charming beach that happens to be the best seashell beach in NJ. Whether you're a veteran shell-hunter looking to add to your collection, or a parent whose child is fascinated by the varied shells on the beach, this is one summer destination you can't miss.
Bayshore Waterfront Park in Port Monmouth is one of New Jersey's best beaches, and few people know about it.
Located near Sandy Hook, it features a lengthy pier that provides a stunning view of the ocean.
However, its best feature is buried in the gritty sand - it's the best beach in New Jersey for shell-hunting.
In addition to clams and mussels, you'll find a large number of slipper shells - a type of sea snail.
The grand prize of shell-hunting at this beach is the large Knobbed Whelk shell - the official state shell of New Jersey!
The beach is less crowded than some of the big ones, but still holds festivals during the summer including sandcastle-building contests.
The area is also home to the historic Seabrook Wilson House. Tours are currently suspended during repairs, but are expected to resume once the house has been restored.
