New Hampshire may only have 18 miles of coastline, but that shoreline has some spectacular views. East-facing along the Atlantic Ocean is Rye Harbor, which is the perfect place to see breathtaking sunrises. You may have to get up earlier than usual, so set your alarm, grab a cup of coffee, and head on over.
Rye Harbor is located in the small town of Rye, New Hampshire, which is just over five miles south of Portsmouth. Many anchored and moored boats line the harbor, creating a picture-perfect scene as the sun rises.
Rye Harbor State Park is a great option for optimal sunrise watching over the harbor and ocean. The park lies on the northern border of the harbor in Awcomin Marsh and is just off Ocean Boulevard.
The park offers plenty of benches along the shore, which are perfect for scenic sunrise views of the Atlantic Ocean, the Isles of Shoals, and Rye Harbor, which is also called Ragged Neck.
There is a large grassy area, so bring a blanket and have a picnic breakfast. There are also plenty of picnic tables and a covered picnic area.
As you watch the beauty of the waking day, you will notice the Isle of Shoals in the distance. This group of small islands and tidal ledges is about seven miles off the shore. Historically, the islands were used by Native Americans as fishing camps in the spring and summer.
Before you visit, be sure to contact Rye Harbor State Park, since operating times are seasonal and weather dependent. Also note that there is a small parking fee depending on the season.
There is no better way to start the day than to watch the sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean. Wake up early and head over to Rye Harbor and the Rye Harbor State Park to take in the spectacular morning scene. You will be glad that you did.
