New Hampshire has just 18 miles of coastline, and much of it is rocky and rugged. We're not only okay with that, we love it! Here's a rocky beach that might not be the best for sunbathing, but it's definitely picturesque, and perfect for a day of recreation.
A visit to Rye Harbor State Park is the perfect way to spend an afternoon. This pretty park is small, but you'll find plenty to see and do here.

You'll definitely want to explore the rocky beach. Wear some sturdy shoes and go for a walk. You might find some interesting pebbles, shells, and driftwood.
The large, flat rocks of the jetty make it a tempting spot to explore, too. Just be aware of the tide and the weather conditions.
The park has restrooms and picnic tables in a large, grassy area above the beach. Bring a snack or picnic lunch to enjoy.
With a New Hampshire fishing license in hand, you can even cast your line out to see if you can catch some lunch.
The sheltered little cove is a great spot for kayaking. Paddle to your heart's content under the bright blue sky.
Rye Harbor is not generally very crowded, so you'll enjoy a quiet, peaceful afternoon.
The water is cold year-round, but if you're brave enough you can do a bit of wading...
...or just take a stroll with your buddy.
Check out the 1614 Monument - a tribute to Captain John Smith, who explored this part of the coast more than 400 years ago.
The Isles of Shoals lie six miles from the coast, and you can learn about them here. Bring your binoculars - on a clear day, you can see them from the park.
Rye Harbor State Park is open year-round from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.. The admission fee is $4 for adults, $2 for children.
