New Hampshire's Lakes Region is well-known for its scenic beauty, tourism appeal, and quaint towns that line the shores. Further west is another "lakes region" that should not be overlooked. The area surrounding Lake Sunapee is full of natural wonder, classic New England charm, and tiny towns. One charming New Hampshire town on the lake, Sunapee, makes for a fine destination, whether for a day or a lifetime.
The town of Sunapee lies to the west of Lake Sunapee, which is the fifth-largest lake located entirely within the state.
Incorporated in 1781 and after several name changes, the name Sunapee was settled upon. Its origins come from the Algonquian words "suna" (goose) and "apee" (water).
Lake Sunapee is the dominant attraction in this area. With a shoreline of about 70 miles, the lake contains 11 named islands.
When railroads reached the region in the 19th century, the lake became a haven for tourists. Steamboats were a common sight then, ferrying guests to waterfront hotels.
The lake is also the location of three lighthouses that are on the National Register of Historic Places.
The other major attraction of the region is Mt. Sunapee in the neighboring town of Newbury. The mountain is one of the most popular ski areas in the state.
In summer, the slopes of Mt. Sunapee are a haven for mountain bikers and hikers. A vast network of trails covers the mountain.
In addition to the major attractions, Sunapee is also home to classic small-town shops and restaurants like The Anchorage At Sunapee Harbor.
