These days we're all taking pictures constantly with our phones, and it's hard to imagine a time when we couldn't easily record our memories and surroundings. Photography really hasn't been around that long in the scheme of things though, and in its early days it was a rarity. But those that survived to this day go a long way to recording and preserving the history of their subjects for us to enjoy today. In this case, it's the history of the Granite State that is preserved in these old photos of New Hampshire. Looking back to some of historic New Hampshire photos is absolutely fascinating - we hope you enjoy this collection of our favorites as much as we did!
1. Claremont, 1836-39 (exact date unknown). Monadnock Mill No. 1 on Water Street.
This has to be one of the first photos taken in NH, if not the entire United States.
2. Jaffrey, 1896. Trail near Mount Monadnock.
3. Jaffrey, 1870-1880 (exact date unknown). The "Mountain House" on Mount Monadnock.
4. Keene, 1900-1920 (exact date unknown). Children in schoolhouse.
5. Manchester, 1909. Amoskeag Mills workers, including very young girls.
6. Grafton, 1897. Family farm.
7. 1862-1865 (exact date unknown). A soldier in the New Hampshire's Ninth Regiment during the Civil War.
8. White Mountains, 1910. Vacationers enjoy "the nation's playground."

10. Wentworth's Location, 1892. A steamer boards passengers at Flint's Landing.
11. Hampstead, 1903. A home in the town of Hampstead.
12. Mount Washington. The Boston Public Library's records only state that this stereograph comes from between 1850 and 1920, but based on the timeline of the Mt. Washington railway construction (completed in 1869) we believe this photo dates back to that decade.
These historic New Hampshire photos really capture some of the depth our history and remind us of the resilience of our Granite State roots. What do you think of these photos? Do you recognize any of the places depicted in these old photos of New Hampshire? Let us know in the comments!
