In the 1850s, the expansion of rail service into New Hampshire meant that tourists could more easily visit what was once a vast wilderness area at the time. Along with this boom in visitors came the era of the grand hotel. While most of these classic structures didn't survive into the modern age, there is one that you can still stay at today. Check out the Omni Mount Washington Resort, one of the very best hotels in New Hampshire.
Omni Mount Washington Resort was designed by Charles Alling Gifford and constructed between 1900 and 1902. It is one of only three survivors of New Hampshire's era of grand hotels that flourished between 1880 and 1910. These elegant getaways were built to attract the elite class of tourists from cities like Boston.
Some things have changed since this scene in 1920, but much of the spirit and spectacle of Omni Mount Washington Resort remains the same a century later.
The hotel's lavish interior matches its timeless exterior design. Since restored, the original hotel was crafted by Italian artisans.
The northern side of the hotel faces the grandeur of the Presidential Range and its highest peak, Mt. Washington. Guests can sit here and watch the last light of the day light up the range.
Foliage season is always spectacular in New Hampshire, and Omni Mount Washington Resort offers a fantastic view of the color of the surrounding landscape.
Of course, a grand hotel like this one has just about everything you could want as far as dining options. Several restaurants and bars within the hotel cater to all tastes.
Luxurious, comfortable rooms ensure a good night's sleep after a busy day after exploring the local area.
In winter, world-class skiing at Bretton Woods is just a short drive up the road. This is the largest ski area in New Hampshire with over 460 acres of terrain.
