The 34.5-mile Kancamagus Highway cuts through the heart of the White Mountains from Lincoln to Conway. Along the way it follows rivers, visits panoramic overlooks, and climbs over a high mountain pass. In the fall, it's probably the most spectacular spot in the state to catch stunning foliage color. It's one of the premier NH scenic drives that takes time to fully appreciate, so why not make these stops along the way?
1. Rocky Gorge Scenic Area
At this ledgy notch, the Swift River slides over ledges and drops through a narrow gorge on its downhill course. Please note: swimming is prohibited here. For more information, visit the U.S. Forest Service website.
2. Lower Falls
An ideal place for a picnic or to take a swim, Lower Falls carries the Swift River eastward over a series of ledges before dropping into a pool. For more information, visit the U.S. Forest Service website.
3. East Branch Pemigewasset River
Starting at the large parking area for Lincoln Woods, one can take an easy stroll along this scenic river, following the grade of an historic logging railroad. For more information, visit the U.S. Forest Service website.
4. Boulder Loop Trail
This 3.1-mile hiking trail visits varied forest types, winds through boulder fields, and provides spectacular views from open ledges. For more information, visit the U.S. Forest Service website.
5. Anywhere Along The Swift River
East of Kancamagus Pass, the highway's highest point, the road stays close to the Swift River. Numerous pull-offs allow for stops to soak the feet or to take in the views.
6. Lily Pond
This small pond just along the roadside is a good spot to stretch your legs and take in the scenery of the surrounding mountains. For more information, visit the U.S. Forest Service website.
7. Russell-Colbath Homestead
This historic house is the only remaining early homestead in the Swift River valley. It is now operated as a museum. For more information, visit the U.S. Forest Service website.
The Kanc is most definitely moose country, so keep your eyes peeled!
If you happen to spot one of these magnificent creatures along the highway, STOP for your safety and theirs. Give them plenty of room and appreciate the wonder of the moment.
The "Kanc" as we call it here, is one of the great NH scenic drives. The road can be explored any time of year but is especially beautiful in summer and fall. Visit the Kancamagus Scenic Byway website for more information.
