Sometimes, when you're in northern New Hampshire, you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. However, one spot in the north woods literally IS the middle, halfway between the equator and the north pole. It’s the 45th Parallel New Hampshire!
The 45th Parallel NH runs through Clarksville, a tiny town south of the Canadian border. Along the world, lines of latitude run parallel to the equator. The 45th passes through the United States, Canada, China, and Russia, including our own corner of the globe right here in New Hampshire.
Clarksville had fewer than 300 residents during the last census, so when you stand halfway to the equator and halfway to the North Pole you really will feel like you're in the middle of nowhere.
However, despite the rural feel, you will also be connected to the rest of the globe standing on the 45th parallel. On this spot, you are directly west of Greenwich, England. If you drew a line directly through the globe from this spot it would come out in the Indian Ocean just south of Australia.
From the 45th parallel, you would have to travel just over 3100 miles north to the North Pole, and south to the equator.
The 45th Parallel is easily found in a triangular park at the junction of Route 145 and Clarksville Pond Road in Clarksville.
While you're in Clarksville be sure to check out the gorgeous Connecticut Lakes and the stunning mountain views. After you see those, you might realize there's a reason that New Hampshire is the center of your world!
