We're now officially passed the holiday season, which means that going to the mall and waiting in lines for shopping and photo taking isn't a requirement. But on a cold wintry day, you might be tempted to head the mall just to get out of the house. We suggest you do something different. Rather than heading to the mall (even if that mall offers buttery pretzels and food court snacks!) we recommend trying any number of the wonderful attractions that exist other places in New Hampshire. Once you've narrowed down the things you want to do, you might want to share this list with a friend who keeps asking you to go shopping!
1. Enjoy the best of New Hampshire at one of these winter festivals.
New Hampshirites loves a good winter! We have to or else these months would go by very slowly. One of the best ways to celebrate the season is by checking out one of the state's winter festivals. You can pick one from this list and be assured that there's fun waiting for you.
2. Look into the skies.
On January 21st, New Hampshirites will have the ability to see one of the most incredible celestial happenings of the year - a full lunar eclipse! But, this isn't just any eclipse. This one will be accompanied by a super blood moon and a wolf moon. Learn all about what that means and when to look up here.
3. Snow tube your winter away!
Sledding on your own is fun, but nothing beats the slopes at Granite Gorge this time of year. Get yourself a tube and fly down the mountain to freedom! Find out what types of runs they have and how to get tickets here.
4. Relive Christmas on this Christmas tree trail.
Christmas might be over, but there's no reason you can't enjoy this lovely trail of trees. The .8 mile route will take you through a seemingly endless forest of stately Christmas trees, perfect for preparing for next Christmas! Learn more about the trail and the farm on which it exists here.
5. Explore antiques at New Hampshire's winter flea markets.
Everyone knows that New Hampshire has the best history in New England. What's tucked up above in your grandmother's attic might be worth more than you can imagine. But, if your grandmother doens't have an attic head straight to the winter flea markets that are located all over the state. Start here if you're looking for a few to explore.
6. See Mt. Washington in the winter the only way it CAN be seen.
In one of these special SnowCoaches! In the winter, the Auto Road is closed to regular traffic, but these special vans are equipped with snow-ready wheels allowing for an experience unlike anything you've ever had on your own. Learn more about it and see what they look like in action here.
7. Take a 60-minute sleigh ride though the forest.
No matter how many New Hampshire winters you've experienced, there's a good chance this will be truly unique. Hop in for a horse-led ride through the country and forest, complete with blankets and hot chocolate at the end. Learn more about it here.
8. See the land from way up high while winter zip-lining!
Head to Loon Mountain for some of the best views in New Hampshire this winter. Their zip line course is open through the season and tickets are about $29. Learn more about it and see a fun video just in case you can't do it in person here.
9. Fly through the forest on a winter coaster.
The coaster at Gunstock Mountain Resort is open year-round, but it's best in the winter. It goes downhill, heading around exhilarating turns and banked corners, as well as fun drops and even some 360° turns. Check out photos of it and get more information about tickets and hours here.
10. Be awed at Ice Castles
We've said it before and we'll say it again...Ice Castles is stunning! This is a great place to go if you're looking to add a little magic to your New Hampshire winter. it's set to open in the next week or so (check the website to be sure) and we think it's worth going at least once each year. You can learn more about it here.
While you're considering your options for activities in New Hampshire, we'd like to suggest taking a look at some beginners hikes. Even those who have braved trails for years will find something fun in each of these!
