In the middle of the desert in Overton is one of Nevada's greatest hidden gems. Here you can walk around a place that has been called "The Lost City" and gaze in wonder at artifacts and dwellings from a prehistoric civilization. The remnants of this city are stunning and the unique energy surrounding it is undeniable. It's all part of a museum that was built back in 1935. Since then, the museum has been dedicated to preserving a truly incredible part of Nevada's history. Check it out.
The Lost City Museum originally opened in 1935 as a place to display artifacts that were being found at the Pueblo Grande de Nevada, a 30-mile area of Pueblo ruins in the Muddy River Valley.
Back when the Hoover Dam was originally built, the filling of the reservoir literally drowned a countless number of artifacts in these archaeological sites. The museum was opened as a way to save artifacts from being destroyed forever.
However, the main attraction of the museum is the replica Pueblo city built right on top of the original prehistoric foundation. This reproduction of the exact village that was built as far back as 8000 BC allows visitors to get a true idea of what the settlement actually looked like.
The Pueblo houses and the museum are built directly on the original archaeological site where many of the artifacts in the museum were collected. It's truly amazing that you get to see the Lost City's original foundation up close like this.
Inside the museum are a variety of artifacts and interesting exhibits from different historical eras. This is one of the few places in Nevada with such a huge collection of artifacts. It's mind boggling to look at them all and think just how long they've been in this exact area.
Old baskets, knives, sandals, pottery, and more are all on display. The artifacts are actually in amazing condition when you consider they are centuries upon centuries old.
The reconstructed dwellings are truly the museum's showstopper. The effort that goes into maintaining authenticity is evident in this display. As you stroll around the Lost City, you can't help but feel a strange energy surrounding the place.
The Lost City Museum can be found at 721 S Moapa Valley Blvd, Overton, NV 89040. They are open daily 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. The entry fee is $5, a very small price for the remarkable experience you'll have here.
