Hiding just north of Ely in eastern Nevada is the little community of McGill. This nostalgic small town is home to just 1,148 people but it's absolutely oozing with old-fashioned charm. This place not be the first that comes to mind when you think of road trip destinations, but you're about to find out that there's all sorts of treasuring are hiding out in McGill and they are definitely worth checking out. Out of all of Nevada's seriously small towns, this one might be the most charming and we think you will agree. Take a look:
In a way, McGill is very much like any other of the dozens of once-booming towns in Nevada that rose and fell with the mining industry. However, as soon as you arrive it is clear there is something special about this place.
There is an undeniable timeless quality to McGill. Driving down the main street you'll see old-fashioned buildings that have retained a charming character despite being over a century old. Businesses are scarce, and there's a peaceful atmosphere about the town.
McGill is the type of place that people are tempted to call a "ghost town". It may be quiet, but this town is still alive and kickin'. Perhaps that's the most amazing thing about this place. It didn't die off like the rest. It kept going.
There aren't many "attractions" so to speak in this town, but you'll definitely find quite a few treasures that are worth exploring. Most notable is the rather extraordinary McGill Drug Store Museum. If you love old-fashioned finds, then this is the place to be.
As you'll see from the outside, the museum was once an actual drug store. Back in the day, the store acted as a sort of focal point in town. It finally closed its doors after decades of business in 1979, as many drug stores did during this era.
Today, you can visit the store and see what a real functioning drug store used to look like. In fact, the store looks exactly the way it used to be. It even contains a functioning soda fountain, decades-old products, and prescriptions that date back to 1915.
You won't find many food options here, so a stop at Marie's Cafe isn't just a good idea but a necessity. However, you'll be pleasantly satisfied that this cute little diner is everything you'd expect from a small town gem.
It can be hard to find good food in a remote town like this one, but Marie's makes it easy. Boasting classic American diner food, a visit here is the cherry on top of your visit to this nostalgic small town.
