There Is A Unique Man-Made Wonder Hiding In This Nevada Town

The United States is full of interesting destinations and attractions. Some of us are drawn to the most unique and unusual among them and seek them out wherever they may be. One very unique and unusual attraction in Nevada is Thunder Mountain Monument. This collection of works of art, all by one man, is found on the side of Interstate 80 between Winnamucca and Lovelock, and it was designated a State of Nevada Historic Site in 1992. Thunder Mountain Monument is one of the most interesting collections of art by one artist in Nevada. Some might even say that it's one of the most interesting in the entire United States.

The creation of this vast collection of works was begun in 1969. It was partially destroyed by arson in 1983, and the artist died by suicide in 1989.

So who built this massive, five-acre art exhibition on the side of I-80, anyway - and why?

Frank Van Zant was a Native American WWII veteran from Oklahoma. In 1969, he had an epiphany and believed he needed to build shelters for the impending apocalypse on this land in Nevada.

He ended up building seven buildings here, including a three-story hostel that was operational during the 1970s.

There are also over 200 concrete sculptures on the property. They depict Native Americans and scenes from Native American history and lore.

There are also works of art here made from found objects like cars, antique bottles, doll parts, scrap metal, and more.

There are so many interesting things to see and view at Thunder Mountain Monument.

You're going to want to take a lot of photographs if you visit.
