Hiding in the Great Basin is a little known place called Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge. If heaven can exist on earth, then this is it. If you've been in desperate need of some alone time with nature then you'll definitely want to plan a visit to this place.
This place makes you feel like you're a million miles away from the desert. The refuge encompasses 367,632 acres of spring-fed marshes and boasts lush, vibrant foliage. It's an absolute paradise for outdoor enthusiasts.
Ruby Valley is the remnant of an ancient lake called Franklin Lake. When the 300,000-acre lake dried up it left behind the wetlands that you see today.
Ruby Lake boasts an abundance of recreational opportunities like wading, camping, fishing, and more. However, the area's wildlife viewing is what really makes this place special. The place is bursting with life! Here you can view deer, elk, coyotes, badgers, rabbits, a multitude of bird species, and much more.
The lake for which the refuge is named after reaches up to 60 feet in depth and provides awesome opportunities for boating.
The main thing that visitors notice about this place is the silence. There's an overwhelming sense of peace and quiet here in the marsh. Everything seems to be perfectly still, with only the occasional fluttering of a nearby bird or splashing of a fish to disturb you.
The refuge is definitely remote. You'll find the area via a series of backroads from Elko. It's these types of places that remind us how amazing it is to live in one of the most solitary places in the country!
If you're looking to escape into nature for a few hours, you'll definitely want to plan a trip to this hidden gem. This hidden marsh represents the very best parts of Nevada: pure, unspoiled wilderness.
