Most towns in Nebraska do something to celebrate Christmas, even if it's just a couple of festive lights on Main Street. A lot of towns and cities go a little nuts with the decorations. And then there's North Platte, which every year for about a month turns into just about the most magical city in Nebraska.
The largest concentration of Christmas excitement in North Platte is Christmas in Cody Park. The park is taken over by twinkly lights, colorful decorations, a massive Christmas tree, and the incomparable Santa's Workshop. The 2016 event kicks off on December 3rd at 6pm with the mayor's tree lighting ceremony. Concessions and rides will be operating for most of the month of December.
Also at Cody Park, sweetly decorated huts bring to life little scenes of Christmas joy. You can meander past them sipping hot cocoa and looking into the adorable snippets of holiday life inside. You'll find Santa's mailbox nearby so you can send him all of your Christmas hopes and wishes.

The Carousel of Homes is a time-honored tradition in North Platte that features four homes decorated to the hilt along with decorations at the Prairie Arts Center and North Platte Community Playhouse. This year, one of the homes featured 75 nativity scenes, and another had a large Christmas village with a Union Pacific train running through it.
The tour of the Carousel of Homes was on November 19th, so mark your calendars for next year's display. Winter Wonderland at the Prairie Arts Center is ongoing through December.
The famous Candy Cane Lane is another local favorite - an entire neighborhood brings out their very best decorations and lights up the city with their amazing creations. You can drive or walk the neighborhood to marvel at the creative displays (video below).
Christmas at the Codys' is one of the most beloved Christmas displays in the area. The mansion, outbuildings, and grounds of Buffalo Bill Cody's former home are decked out in vintage Christmas fashion. Carolers, horse-drawn carriage rides, roasted chestnuts, and live entertainment make this a can't-miss event. Get more information and times here.
The Golden Spike Tower gets in on the action with their "Christmas Around the World" display. This year, the theme is Christmas trees around the world.
