The Historic Waterfront Trail In Nebraska That Is An Adventurer’s Dream
The Chief Standing Bear Trail in Nebraska commemorates the tragic journey of the Ponca people and offers a scenic, reflective hiking and biking experience.
Nebraska's history is full of moments that have been commemorated in a number of ways over the years; this beautiful walking trail is among the most unique, lovely, and ultimately heartbreaking.
The Chief Standing Bear Trail is named for this man, Chief Standing Bear, the Ponca chief who was instrumental in gaining legal "personhood" for Native Americans.
The legal victory was hard-won, however, after a great deal of tragedy. In 1877, the Ponca people were forced to move from their homeland in Nebraska to a reservation in Oklahoma. The deplorable conditions en route to and in the resettlement area led to the deaths of nearly a third of the tribe, including Standing Bear's daughter, Prairie Flower, and his son, Bear Shield. Chief Standing Bear returned to Nebraska to bury his son in their homeland and was arrested for leaving the reservation. The ensuing court trial against the government resulted in the landmark legal ruling.

The 23-mile trail roughly follows the route that the Ponca were forced to take on the way to the resettlement area.
Beginning in Beatrice, the trail traverses the scenic Blue River Valley, ending at the Nebraska/Kansas border. There are four trailheads in Beatrice, Holmesville, Blue Springs, and Barneston.
Though it begins with a small stretch of pavement, the majority of the trail is crushed limestone. It crosses 16 bridges, originally built by Union Pacific when this path was a railroad route.
Although it is beautiful all year, the trail is particularly remarkable in fall, when the leaves are in full color. The winter brings increased visibility of the river after the leaves have fallen.
The trail is perfect for hiking and biking; no motorized vehicles are allowed on the trail at any point.
Traveling the trail is quite the experience, whether on foot or on wheels. Although it's undeniably beautiful, the trail's real appeal lies in the story it tells of the Ponca people and their tragic past. Travel it mindfully and you may feel a connection to the brave men and women who were forced to travel this route more than 140 years ago.

Nebraska is a hidden gem through and through, and its hiking trails are an idyllic example of this.

The Schramm Park State Recreation Area is an amazing little respite from the real world that you can visit - and hike - year-round. My favorite times to hike tend to be in the spring and early summer (and autumn, of course), but this is a great destination for outdoorsy things to do in the winter, too. As luck would have it, there are plenty of hiking trails around here, too - perfect for killing a whole afternoon somewhere inescapably beautiful.
Coming in at just over two miles in length, the wondrous Schramm Park Nature Loop is mostly easy and takes about an hour (unless you opt to stop along the way, which I highly recommend). There's plenty of shade, but be sure to bring water anyway, even if it's not hot out. Hydration is key, friends!
It's tough to understate the adventure this trail is. Surrounded by lush green leaves from trees and bushes of all sorts, this amazing hike features an awesome footbridge, a hanging bridge, a lake, a fish hatchery, and more. It's a whole day trip rolled into a short hike, and it's no secret as to why some folks keep returning. It's an amazingly peaceful place, and the opportunities to clear your mind are bountiful. There are lots of hiking trails in Nebraska, but there's something especially wonderful about this one specifically.
It's easy to get lost here, but don't worry - follow the trail, and you won't get literally lost, even though this fascinating little park definitely feels like something all the way away from it all. It's not, though - it's located in the small town of Gretna, Nebraska, and it's an amazing way to get out and enjoy the world around you without roaming too far.
With so many little offshoots and sub-trails to explore, it's easy to immerse yourself in this one all day, and I wouldn't blame you. Nebraska is beautiful, and it never seems to get the credit it so rightly deserves. Where most people see something boring, I see something incredible, and with every hike, I hope you can fall in love with the Cornhusker State just a little more and more. Soon enough, you'll wonder why you ever wanted to leave.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L.
