Anyone who knows Nebraska history knows that our state has strong ties to the railroad industry. Being right in the heart of the country, Nebraska has always been an important location in the railroad system. While passenger trains are functionally extinct now, you can still get the experience of riding in a vintage train at one cute restaurant in North Platte.
Switchyard Grill opened in North Platte in 2017. The building itself is a beautiful example of early 20th-century construction.
It's enjoyed several lives since it was built in 1928. It was the first drive-in service station in North Platte, then later was partitioned into three separate spaces. The spaces have been everything from offices and restaurants to car body shops and bars.
After a major renovation in the 1980s to restore the building and emphasize its best features, a restaurant opened in the space. Later, it would become the Depot Grill & Pub until the business closed in 2015.
Under new ownership, Switchyard Grill & Pub opened here in 2017. The interior manages to be both historic and adorable, conveying both the power of the railroad and the friendliness of a local restaurant.
Sit down in one of the wooden booths and the little curtain between it and the next booth will remind you of privacy durtains in trains. The rich inlaid wood walls and gorgeous original ceiling tiles lend a historic vibe to the dining area.
But don't worry - this isn't an actual train station, so you won't be subjected to train station food!
The menu consists of American favorites like burgers, salads, pasta, steak, and sandwiches. A featured meal is offered at lunch and dinner time every day, so you're likely to find something new and delicious each time you visit.
Like this former dinner special, for example. This is a grilled ribeye with blistered tomatoes, truffle duchess potatoes and red wine demi glaze...our mouths are watering just thinking about it.
No matter what you order, you'll feel cozy and welcomed here in this unique space. In addition to a flavorful menu, you can expect to find a hearty selection of beers on tap and a decent wine list.
Combine a great menu with a large selection of drinks, a delightful dining area, and friendly staff and you have one of the most remarkable dining experiences in town. To find out more about this unique dining destination, check out its website or Facebook page.
